Platform income and variable work

How are PAWE and weekly payments worked out for gig or platform work?

There is no separate app-worker formula: apply the statutory earnings rules to reliable records

A rideshare driver, delivery rider, marketplace contractor or other platform worker must first be classified by the real earning arrangement and Schedule 1. PAWE concerns pre-accident gross earnings under the applicable method. Weekly benefits then consider accident-related loss, actual post-accident earnings and post-accident earning capacity. Platform deposits are not necessarily personal earnings: commissions, GST, vehicle costs, refunds, tips, incentives, multiple apps and other business expenses may require reconciliation. The site calculator should not be used for an unsupported automated result where those records are incomplete.

Platform work often produces high-volume, irregular records. One app may report gross customer fares, another may show the net transfer after fees, and the tax return may combine several activities. A reliable claim schedule must explain which amount represents income from personal exertion and avoid double counting.

Employment status can also matter outside CTP. This page does not decide whether a platform worker is an employee or contractor under employment or tax law. For NSW CTP weekly benefits, the evidence must still establish earner status, pre-accident earnings, post-accident work and capacity under the Act.

Platform statements must be reconciled with fees, expenses, bank records and tax evidence before a reliable PAWE calculation.

How should gig-work PAWE evidence be prepared?

Export complete platform statements for the relevant pre-accident period, not selected screenshots. Reconcile gross fares or job value, platform commission, incentives, tips, cancellations, GST treatment and net bank transfers. Add tax returns, notices of assessment, BAS, bank statements and an accountant schedule where the activity is conducted as a business.

Schedule 1 defines loss of earnings through income from personal exertion, including employee amounts and proceeds of a business. The statutory PAWE method uses gross earnings and specified periods. The correct treatment of business proceeds and expenses can require accounting evidence; turnover should not be assumed to equal the claimant’s weekly personal earnings.

If several platforms or jobs operated together, disclose all sources and map each once. A spreadsheet should state the period, source and whether the number is gross customer revenue, platform net, taxable business income or another figure. Unsupported averaging can materially distort seasonal or irregular work.

How do post-accident app earnings affect weekly payments?

Keep weekly platform activity, completed jobs, online hours, cancellations, incentives, gross receipts, platform fees and necessary expenses. Actual earnings and work activity can be relevant to both the payment amount and earning capacity, but logging into an app is not necessarily the same as completing paid work.

If the claimant changes from driving to a different platform or reduces hours, record why. Vehicle unavailability, account suspension, low demand and personal choice are different from medical restriction. The insurer may dispute whether the accident caused the income change unless medical and activity evidence connect the loss.

The insurer may assess capacity above actual platform income. Test the proposed hours, work type, physical demands, location, demand and rate. After week 78, reasonably available employment is broader than the original platform work, subject to the Schedule 1 and Guidelines factors.

What commonly causes a gig-worker PAWE dispute?

Disputes commonly arise from incomplete apps, mixing gross and net figures, unexplained transfers, personal and business costs, cash tips, seasonal weeks, vehicle expenses or a later amended tax return. The answer is a reconciled source schedule, not a single preferred document.

Wade v QBE illustrates why self-employed PAWE evidence must be tested against underlying business records rather than treated as resolved by a later amended return. A decision in another case does not set a universal expense method, but it shows why contemporaneous invoices, accounts and explanations matter.

Ask for the insurer worksheet and identify every disputed input. The amount of weekly benefits can be subject to internal review and PIC merit review. If records are insufficient for a reliable calculation, obtain an accountant-assisted and legal review rather than asking the calculator to guess.

Practical next steps

Build a platform-work earnings schedule

Reconcile the app, bank and tax records before calculating an average.

  1. Export every platform

Use full statements for the correct pre- and post-accident periods.

  2. Label gross, fees and net

Do not mix customer value, app commission and bank transfers.

  3. Document business expenses

Keep invoices and an accountant explanation for costs relied on.

  4. Map work activity by week

Record online time, completed jobs, earnings and medical restrictions.

  5. Compare the insurer worksheet

Challenge the exact source, period, classification or capacity assumption.

Evidence

Gig and platform worker evidence

The records should reconcile across platforms, bank accounts and tax material.

  • Full platform earnings and activity exports.
  • Commission, fee, incentive, tip and cancellation records.
  • Business and personal bank statements where relevant.
  • Tax returns, notices of assessment and BAS.
  • Vehicle, equipment and other expense invoices.
  • Accountant reconciliation of gross and net business figures.
  • Certificates of Fitness and weekly activity records.
  • Insurer PAWE and capacity worksheets.

Gig-work calculation mistakes

  • Do not use one bank transfer as the weekly gross figure.
  • Do not omit another platform or employment source.
  • Do not deduct every personal expense as a business cost without support.
  • Do not treat app login time as paid work without context.
  • Do not automate a result where classification or records require professional judgment.

Timing

Preserve platform data early

Some apps limit accessible history or change report formats.

  • Export pre-accident statements before access expires.
  • Notify the insurer immediately of resumed platform work or changed earnings.
  • Keep the date of PAWE and capacity decisions.
  • Do not wait for the next tax return if a current review period is running.

Frequently asked questions

Are Uber or delivery app deposits my PAWE?
Not automatically. They may be net platform transfers rather than the statutory gross earnings figure. Complete records and classification are needed.
Can I combine several apps?
All relevant earning sources should be disclosed and reconciled without double counting. The statutory method then applies to the combined evidence.
Do vehicle expenses reduce the figure?
Business expense treatment can require accounting and legal analysis. Keep the invoices and do not assume every vehicle cost is deductible for PAWE.
What if I have no formal payslips?
Use platform exports, invoices, bank records, tax material and an accountant schedule. The evidence must still support the amount and period.
Can I work a few app hours while receiving weekly payments?
Potentially, but report the work and earnings immediately. The insurer will consider actual earnings and capacity under the applicable formula.
Can the PAWE calculator handle gig work?
Only if the inputs are reliable and the pathway fits the implemented rules. Where business classification or expenses require judgment, use individual review rather than an automated result.
